As we all decompress from the high of the Paris Olympics and gear up for the Paralympics, let’s reflect on a few learnings from the momentous event.
Mental Health is Priority: Sports is as mental as it is physical. Simon Biles has been one of the advocates to bring the paradigm shift in athlete’s mindset. In the Tokyo & Paris Olympics, she prioritized her mental health over everything, & so can you now!
Support is contagious: Paris Olympics was a show of camaraderie. Not just family & team from your own country but across the globe athletes supported each other. This event showcased the importance of extending support to receive support to reach your highest potential. Shuttler He Bingjiao showcasing the Spain flag on the winning podium reflects sportsmanship and respect towards her opponent.
Focus on the process not the outcome – The ‘UnPhogatable’ Vinesh showcased what we call control the controllable. Despite all odds, Vinesh achieved great feats in her sport as she focused on giving her 100% without paying heed to the results. Outcome may not be in her favour but she impressed the entire Nation with her grit, resilience and hardwork.
Failure is Temporary -With a weapon fault in Tokyo to two medals in Paris Manu Bhaker proved the world that Failure is temporary. She showed us that efforts directed in the right direction can turn failure into success.
The Paris Olympics offered far more valuable lessons than we just discussed. As a psychologist, I view sporting events as opportunities to learn & grow. Great athletes only withhold their learnings from each competition as they know the outcome, win or loss is just temporary. it is important that you too learn, pause & then reflect on your learning from your competitions.
